In 1958, when
Taiwan’s broadcasting industry was still in its infancy, American
Jesuit Fr. Phillip Bourret, SJ foresaw that mass media would become
a powerful influence on the development of Taiwan society. So he
founded ‘Kuangchi Recording Studio’ and began producing radio
programs such as the highly popular series Short, Short Radio
Plays. This was the forerunner of today’s Kuangchi Program
Service (KPS)
In 1961,
‘Kuangchi Cultural Audiovisual Program Service’ registered as a
not-for-profit organization under Taiwan’s Ministry of Education.
Its mission was to be a media production center dedicated to
training professional broadcasting personnel and producing programs
beneficial to society. This marked the beginning of Kuangchi
Program Service’s half-century of dedicated service to Taiwan’s
radio and television audiences. |

Kuangchi Program Service’s productions have received numerous
prizes for excellence, such as Taiwan’s coveted Golden Horse and
Golden Bell awards. Among them are KPS’ science series—Summit
and Mr. Science & Miss Technology; KPS’ children’s
series—Remarkable Professor, Popcorn, and House
Angels; and KPS’ documentary film on Cambodian refugees—Beyond
the Killing Fields. |
